Reflecting on 9/11: A Day of Remembrance in Rockville

Today, I had the honor of attending a gathering at Courthouse Square Park in Rockville, Maryland, to commemorate the lives lost on September 11, 2001. This year, the city officially declared it a National Day of Remembrance. Among those present were Mayor Monique Ashton and members of Remember and Hope, a group dedicated to honoring the victims and heroes of that tragic day. Standing in solidarity with them reminded me of the profound impact 9/11 had not just on America, but on the entire world.

I was just a young child in West Africa when the attacks occurred. I vividly remember coming home from school that day to see the events unfolding live on television. Even from thousands of miles away, I could feel the shock and sorrow that gripped the world. The scenes of destruction, bravery, and loss were seared into my mind—a stark reminder that even the most distant corners of the earth are not untouched by such a significant event.

That day changed the course of history. It led to the wars in the Middle East and sparked the global war on terror, reshaping international relations and altering the geopolitical landscape. Countries were forced to confront new security threats, rethink their policies, and forge alliances in the fight against terrorism. The ripples of 9/11 reached every nation, transforming how we perceive safety, governance, and our shared responsibilities on the global stage.

But today, as we gathered at Courthouse Square Park, the focus was on remembering the heroes who responded with courage and compassion. We paid tribute to the paramedics, police officers, EMTs, firefighters, and countless civilians who sacrificed their lives to save others. Their bravery reminds us that even in the darkest moments, the human spirit can shine the brightest.

September 11 continues to be a day that unites us in grief and hope. It is a day to reflect on how far we have come, to honor the resilience of those who endured unimaginable loss, and to commit ourselves to building a world where peace and understanding prevail.

May we never forget those who were lost, and may their legacy inspire us to work toward a better, more united future.
