Tribute to Akira Toriyama 💔

In memory of the legendary Akira Toriyama, whose creative brilliance illuminated our lives through his iconic works like Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, I pay tribute to a visionary whose impact transcended generations. Introduced to his captivating universe through the mesmerizing games on Sega or Nintendo by a cousin, I found myself drawn into a world where imagination knew no bounds.

As I meticulously sketched his characters in my copybooks at school, I marveled at Toriyama's distinct style, which became a guiding light for my own artistic endeavors. Even my father, during his brief lunch breaks, found solace in the captivating adventures unfolding on screen, forging cherished memories that bound us closer together.

The Tournament of Power reignited my fervor for Dragon Ball Z, rekindling the flames of passion that Toriyama's storytelling had ignited within me years before. And with the advent of Dragon Ball Super Fighter Z on the PS4, the exhilarating battles and intricate narratives transported me once again to the vibrant world of Saiyans and Super Saiyans.

Delving deeper into Japanese culture, my journey with Toriyama's creations revealed delightful insights, from the origins of character names like Gohan (derived from "asagohan," meaning breakfast) to the whimsical connections such as Piccolo's resemblance to a pickle and Broly's nod to broccoli, evoking both laughter and appreciation for his playful ingenuity.

In Abidjan, Dragon Ball's popularity during the late 90s was palpable, capturing the hearts and imaginations of many children and adults alike. The dynamic characters, epic battles, and captivating storyline resonated deeply with audiences, transcending cultural boundaries and becoming a cherished part of Ivorian pop culture. Discussions about the latest plot twists and power-ups echoed through neighborhoods and schoolyards, fostering a sense of camaraderie among fans.

Dragon Ball merchandise adorned market stalls, further fueling the frenzy surrounding the series. It wasn't uncommon to see children reenacting their favorite scenes from the show in parks and playgrounds, channeling their inner Saiyans as they unleashed imaginary energy blasts and martial arts moves.

Toriyama's storytelling transcended mere entertainment; it became a guiding force that molded my perceptions and introduced me to the rich tapestry of Japanese culture. His legacy will forever endure, an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of fans worldwide, reminding us of the boundless power of imagination and the profound impact of artistic expression. Farewell, Akira Toriyama, your spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those whose lives you touched with your brilliance.

Farewell to an Ambassador of Japanese's culture to the world.
